Developing the Plan
KDOT, its partners, and a diverse group of stakeholders will be involved throughout the study process for the US-56 Corridor Management Plan. They will participate in project Advisory Committee meetings, group interviews, and workshops during a 15-month planning process that will end in 2010. Their primary role is to offer viewpoints that reflect both the interests of particular areas of the corridor and those of the corridor as a whole. The overall goal for the stakeholder groups is to collaborate with KDOT and its partners in an effort to determine what, if any, changes are needed to respond to community needs and concerns.
One Phase at a Time
The US-56 Corridor Management Plan will be completed in phases. Specific information and input will be gathered during each phase.
Phase 1 – Foundation of Facts
Part of the facts to be assembled in this phase are coming from the Community Survey for a baseline measure of community concerns, and also from a day-long series of stakeholder interviews and the first Advisory Committee meeting. This phase will conclude with the Stakeholders Community Issues Workshop. The workshop will result in a list of issues that will be addressed throughout the planning process.
Phase 2 – Forecast the Future
KDOT and its partners will work through concepts for land use and transportation during this phase of the corridor plan with the goal of determining conceptual improvements based on input from the second Advisory Committee meeting, a public officials briefing and feedback, and a Stakeholders Public Policy Workshop where policy options will be reviewed and prioritized.
Phase 3 – Formulate a Fit
This phase will integrate land use, transportation, access management, and various modes of transportation and community character considerations into the Corridor Plan with appropriate implementation tools. Since the success of implementation depends on community support, crucial input will be incorporated from the third Advisory Committee meeting, a second public officials briefing, and a Stakeholders Character Assessment Workshop to gather consent on the roadway elements, community character aspects, and public policies that are needed to support improvements for US-56. Further, a fourth Advisory Committee meeting will be held to review results from the workshop and to discuss the Draft US-56 Corridor Management Plan. The general public will be invited to attend a public meeting in early 2010.
